House Results

The Democrats took the House of Representatives in the 2018 Midterm elections. I have waited because there still is an undecided race but it looks like it will not be decided anytime soon so I will post the current results. The Democrats have won 435 seats while the Republicans won 199 seats with 1 still undecided. The Democrats have picked up 42 seats and the Republicans lost 36 seats. That is because there were 7 vacant seats during the election and 1 undecided seat currently. There are currently 236 Republicans 197 Democrats and 2 vacant seats in the Lame Duck congress. The vacancies will most likely not be filled so the Democrats will pick up 38 seats and the Republicans will lose 37 seats when the New Congress convenes on January 3rd.

The new house will be the final judge of the new election after all state government and federal court remedies are used. They can either seat a winner, order a recount, or order a new election. Elections were also held for non voting members of congress for 4 of the 5 Territories and the District of Columbia. The Democrats won 3 The Republicans won 1 and Independents won 1. That means There will be 3 Democrats 2 Republicans and 1 Independent in the Next Congress. The Independent will caucus with the Democrats giving the overall majority 4 to 2. The Democrats won the popular vote for this election on non voting members but the Republicans won the aggregate popular vote for all 6 members elections.

The Popular vote for congress was 53% Democrat 44% Republican and 3% independent/ 3rd party/ or write in. The Democrats gained 5% the Republicans lost 4% and the Independents/ 3rd party/ write ins lost 1% from the last election. The Republicans won 26 states, The Democrats won 21 states and 3 states were evenly split based of of delegation majority. The Democrats won the popular vote in 25 states and the Republicans won the popular vote in 25 states. In 3 states the popular vote winner lost the race. 2 resulted in the democrats winning the popular vote and losing the delegation. 1 resulted in the Republicans winning the popular vote and losing the delegation. In the 3 states that were evenly divided the Democrats won the popular vote. In short based off of the popular vote the Republicans were lucky that they did not lose a super majority in the house.
